Simple instructions to expand a VHD size and partition using System Center Virtual Machine Manager

Applies to:
Iron Networks Products: IronPOD Family of Products, Microsoft CPS
Software: System Center VMM 2012 SP1, VMM 2012 R2

To expand the usable space on a VHD (VHDx) file requires expanding the VHD size, then extending the partition structure within the VHD. The process is:

  1. Expand the size of the VHD file.   In this example this is done from within VMM.
  2. Extend the partition to utilize the entire space within the Virtual Hard Disk file.   Once the VHD file has been expanded, from within the running VM, extend the partition.

Expand the VHD size

    1. Log into VMM go to VMs and Services” on the lower left pane
    2. Select the VM desired to expand
    3. Right Click and Shutdown this VM
      1. This process can also be done live without shutting down the VM
    4. Right Click the VM
    5. Select Properties
    6. It will take you to the VM Properties screen where you are able to modify the VM to your specifications.
    7. Go to Hardware Configuration > Bus Configuration > Select the VHD file to expand
    8. Then we expand the Virtual Hard disk by checking the “Expand Virtual Hard Disk” box
    9. Select the new size to expand the VHD file
    10. Click on OK
You can watch the VMM job processing the VHD file by going to Jobs and selecting the processing job.
    11. Now start the VM by doing a VMM Power On.

Expand the Partition

  1. Log into the VM.
  2. Once inside the VM search for “disk partitions” to start the “Create and format hard disk partitions” where you can adjust the partition size
  3. Find the disk which the VHD you have expanded. It will have Unallocated space at the end.

  4. Right Click the active partition and click “Extend Volume” to extend the partition to utilize the additional hard disk size.
  5. Then we enter the Extend Volume Wizard, where we can increase the size of the partition. If you select the defaults, the partition will be extended to the full size of the VHD.
  6. Now the partition will be resized
