SCVMM Console Hangs on Connections

The System Center Virtual Machine Manager console hangs when connecting to the VMM Server

Applies to:
Iron Networks Products: IronPOD Family of Products, Microsoft CPS
Software: SCVMM 2012 R2 rollup 5 and 6
Hardware Components: NA

Connecting from the VMM Console to the VMM Server when the console is installed on a different host than the server hangs. This hang on the console never expires, and the “donut of death” continues to spin forever.
The same behavior can be observed from the PowerShell command:

Get-SCVMMServer <servername>

This command will hang as well.

As it turns out, System Center VMM can be sensitive to different software versions between the client and the server.

In the observed situation, Microsoft Updates had run automatically and upgraded the VMM Server to rollup 6, and the VMM client installed on a different host was still at rollup 5.

Upgrading the client VMM software to rollup 6 resolved the issue.
